Jacketing

Jacketing is a technique used to primarily increase the ductility of existing structural members (e.g. Columns, Beams etc.) by increasing the confinement properties of these members at their compression zone. This is achieved by providing a “Jacket” of additional material around the existing member. Jacketing also increase the shear and flexural capacity of the members. The additional material can be of several types e.g. concrete, steel or FRP.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), also Fiber-reinforced plastic, is a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers, regarding as a substitute application for steel bars or restressing tendon in reinforced concrete (RC) structures.

FRP has wide applications in civil engineering, particularly in strengthening or seismic retrofit of existing RC structures, due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and high corrosion resistance. FRP can enhance the compressive strength and the ultimate strain of concrete significantly, strengthening flexural capacity, shear capacity of RC beams and confining RC columns.
FRP is used for both circular and rectangular shaped columns but it is more effective in the former shape

Increasing Ductility of Structures Using FRP

Steel jacketing technique with variable vertical angles size connected with horizontal steel straps is a method of retrofitting to enhance the ductility, load carrying, shear strength and flexural strength capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns and beams in existing buildings and bridges. This technique is chosen when the loads applied to the column will be increased, and at the same time, increasing the cross sectional area of the column is not permitted.

Increasing Ductility of Structures Using Steel Jacketing

The concrete Jacketing technique is one of the retrofitting strategies used to increase the displacement capacity of reinforced concrete columns. L-Dowels bars and longitudinal bars are installed from top to bottom of column on all faces of column, using appropriate epoxy grout. This is to provide sufficient anchoring of new concrete with the old concrete and new longitudinal rebars.
